Chichester is an elegant cathedral city on the West Sussex coastal plain, built on the Roman street grid that still defines the four main streets meeting at the Market Cross. The city centre has beautiful Georgian and medieval buildings, many with cellars, thick walls and hidden voids where mice have thrived for centuries. The older properties along North Street, South Street and the lanes between them develop gaps in their mortar and around window frames as they age and mice find every opening. The restaurants, pubs and food shops in the city centre create waste that draws rodents to the service areas behind the elegant frontages.

The River Lavant runs through the city and the Chichester Canal heads south toward the harbour and both waterways bring rats into the urban area. The Lavant is an intermittent chalk stream that floods dramatically in wet winters and when it does the rats along its banks are pushed into the surrounding streets and gardens. Chichester Harbour to the south is a huge tidal inlet that supports wildlife and the mudflats and saltmarshes along its edge provide habitat for rats that move into the residential areas at Fishbourne and Bosham.

The city has grown with housing estates at Parklands, Whyke and the newer developments at Graylingwell and Roussillon Park, built on former hospital and military sites. These newer properties see regular mouse activity through cavity walls and around air bricks. The flat farmland that surrounds Chichester on the coastal plain supports large numbers of agricultural rodents that move closer to the city after harvest. Wasp nests are common across all parts of Chichester through summer, from the ancient buildings in the centre to the modern estate houses on the edges and the warm south-coast climate means the wasp season starts earlier and lasts longer than further north.
