Seaview is a small coastal village on the north-east shore of the Isle of Wight, looking across the Solent toward Portsmouth and the mainland. The village is quiet and residential, with a mix of Victorian villas, Edwardian houses and some newer properties along its leafy lanes. The shoreline and the tidal mudflats to the north of the village attract rats that live along the sea wall and in the rocks and vegetation at the water's edge. Properties on the seafront and the lanes closest to the shore see rat activity, with the animals moving between the tidal zone and nearby gardens as the tide rises and falls.

The older buildings in Seaview have brick walls with lime mortar that has been weathering for well over a century and the salt air accelerates this process. The gaps that develop in the mortar give mice easy entry and the older cottages around the High Street and the lanes near the seafront are the most affected. Seaview has a good number of holiday lets and second homes that sit empty during the off-season and these quiet properties attract mice looking for undisturbed shelter. The problem is often well advanced by the time the owners or guests arrive.

The farmland that backs onto the village to the south and west supports field mice and rats that move closer to houses after the harvest and as the weather cools. The mature gardens throughout Seaview with their mature trees and hedges provide shelter for grey squirrels and cover for mice right up to the walls of houses. Wasp nests turn up in the roof spaces and outbuildings of properties through summer and the warm, sheltered aspect of the village means wasps are active earlier in the season and later into autumn than in more exposed locations on the island.
