Ventnor clings to the steep south-facing cliffs of the Isle of Wight, a Victorian seaside town built on terraces that drop sharply towards the seafront. The steep terrain and the age of the buildings create a distinctive pest landscape. Many of the houses are Victorian or Edwardian, built into the hillside with retaining walls, cellars and undercrofts that provide shelter for rats and mice. The gaps that develop as these older structures shift and settle give rodents plenty of ways inside. Rat problems are common in the lower parts of town near the Esplanade and Ventnor Park, where surface water drains towards the sea and the drainage network is under pressure.

The coastline brings its own challenges. Seagulls are a real nuisance in Ventnor, nesting on rooftops across the town and becoming aggressive during the breeding season from May through to August. The herring gulls in particular are bold, swooping at anyone near their nests and scattering rubbish from bins as they look for food. We carry out seagull deterrent work on properties throughout the town, fitting net and spike systems that stop them from nesting and roosting. The steep roofs and varied roof levels in Ventnor make access tricky in places, but getting the birds off the roof makes a genuine difference to the quality of life for the people living below.

Holiday lets and guest houses play a big part in the local economy and that seasonal pattern affects pest control too. Properties that sit empty through the winter can attract mice looking for undisturbed shelter and mouse activity often only comes to light when the owners return in spring to prepare for the season. Wasps nest freely in the old loft spaces and under the eaves of these buildings and a nest that goes unnoticed until guests arrive can cause real problems. The Botanic Garden and the Undercliff further east add to the greenery that makes Ventnor attractive, but they also support insect and rodent life right on the doorstep of the town.
