Shanklin is a traditional seaside resort on the south-east coast of the Isle of Wight, split between the clifftop town and the Old Village that drops down toward the famous Chine and the beach below. The Old Village with its thatched cottages and narrow lanes is beautiful but the older buildings are full of the gaps and crevices that mice love. Thatched roofs provide particularly good shelter for mice and even rats and the traditional construction methods used in these cottages mean there are hidden spaces within the walls and under floors where pests can nest undisturbed for months.

Behind the seafront, the residential streets climbing the hillside have a mix of Victorian guest houses, Edwardian villas and some newer builds. The hotels and B&Bs that have served holiday visitors for generations can develop pest problems between seasons when the buildings sit quieter and cooler and rat activity around the commercial bin areas behind the Esplanade businesses requires ongoing management.

The Chine and the surrounding cliff vegetation provide habitat for rats and mice close to the town and the landslip areas along the coast support a tangle of undergrowth that is home to all sorts of wildlife. The farmland behind Shanklin to the west produces crops and supports livestock and the fields provide rodents that move toward the town when food gets scarce. Wasp nests are common across the town through summer, with the older buildings and their many cavities and voids providing ideal nesting spots. The mild Isle of Wight climate extends the active pest season compared to mainland locations further north.
