East Cowes sits on the eastern bank of the River Medina where it meets the Solent, facing West Cowes across the water. The town has a strong industrial heritage with the old Saunders-Roe and GKN sites being redeveloped, but the waterfront remains a working area with boatyards and marine businesses. The Medina estuary is tidal and the exposed mud at low water provides feeding for rats that live along the riverbanks and around the old industrial buildings near the water. Wasp nests are common across the town through summer, turning up in roof spaces, wall cavities and the older outbuildings that many properties still have. The mild Isle of Wight climate means the wasp season starts early and can stretch into October in a warm year.
