Havant sits on the flat coastal plain between Portsmouth and Chichester, a busy town where the springs that rise from the chalk feed into Langstone Harbour through a network of streams. These waterways run through the town and out into the harbour and they are a constant source of rat activity. The Hermitage Stream and the other small watercourses that thread through the residential areas bring rats from the farmland and the harbour margins right into the built-up streets. Properties near these streams and on the southern edge of town closest to the harbour see the most rat problems.

These estates have cavity wall construction that gives mice hidden routes through the buildings and the green spaces and playing fields between the housing areas provide habitat for field mice and rats. Langstone Harbour to the south is a huge tidal inlet with mudflats and saltmarshes that support a large rat population along the shoreline. Wasp nests are found across all parts of Havant through summer, from the older streets near the centre to the large estates on the edges of town.
