Pest Control in Castle Cary

Castle Cary is a quiet market town at the southern edge of the Somerset Levels, where the flat wetlands start to give way to the rolling hills around Cadbury Castle. The town centre is compact, with an attractive market house, a handful of shops along Fore Street and Bailey Hill and a mix of old stone houses and Georgian buildings lining the main streets. The older properties here are built from the same warm Ham stone that runs through this part of Somerset and while they look wonderful they also come with the structural quirks that mice take advantage of. Gaps in stonework, old cellars with rubble floors and roof timbers with just enough space for a mouse to squeeze between stone and slate.

The Cary River runs along the edge of town and feeds out into the flat farmland to the north and west. Rats follow these waterways and the surrounding ditches and properties near the river or backing onto the fields between Castle Cary and Ansford often deal with rat activity in gardens and outbuildings. The railway station and its associated land also attract rats, as the scrubby embankments and litter along the line provide both food and cover. The allotments and larger gardens around Lodge Hill and the streets to the south of town are other regular spots for rat sightings.

As a small rural town, Castle Cary's pest problems are closely tied to the farming calendar. Harvest time and the onset of cold weather drive a noticeable increase in rodent calls as rats and mice leave fields and barns looking for easier food and warmer shelter. Wasp nests are a predictable summer issue, found in garden walls, under eaves and in the older outbuildings that dot the edges of town.
