Pest Control in Westbury

Westbury is a small Wiltshire town at the western edge of Salisbury Plain, most famously overlooked by the White Horse carved into the chalk escarpment above. The town centre sits in the low ground with the older streets around Edward Street, Maristow Street and the Market Place, while newer estates have grown up along the Warminster Road and around the Leigh Park and Eden Vale developments. The older parts of town have a mix of stone and brick buildings, many with the kinds of cellars, lean-tos and outbuildings that come with age and that mice take full advantage of. The newer estates are generally better sealed, but drainage issues have cropped up on some of the developments where the ground is heavy clay and the pipework has settled unevenly.

The Bitham Brook runs through Westbury and out towards the flat farmland to the west and this water draws rats into the residential streets that border it. The area around Westbury Lake and the allotments near the Bitham Park estate are regular call-out spots for rat problems. The railway yards and the Lafarge cement works on the edge of town also attract rodents and the movement of goods and materials through these sites means that rats can appear on nearby residential streets where they would not otherwise be expected. The surrounding farmland on the plain and in the Biss valley adds another layer of rural rat and mouse pressure from autumn through to spring.

The chalk escarpment above the town and the warm south-facing walls of older properties create sheltered conditions that wasps favour for nesting. Garden walls, loft spaces and the gaps behind timber cladding on some of the newer houses are all common nest locations. The open downland above Westbury also means that ground-nesting wasps occasionally cause problems on properties with larger gardens that back onto the hill.
