Pest Control in Street

Street is a Somerset town on the edge of the levels, best known as the home of Clarks shoes and the factory outlet village that draws visitors from across the region. The town centre is low-lying and flat, with the older parts around the High Street and Leigh Road dating from the 19th century when the shoe industry was at its peak. The residential streets stretch out towards Walton to the south and towards Glastonbury to the north east, with a mix of Victorian workers' houses, inter-war semis and newer estates on the fringes. Mice are a common problem across all of these, but the older terraced houses along the High Street and Somerton Road tend to see the most activity because of the age of the buildings and the number of small gaps that have opened up over the decades.

The flatness of the land and the network of rhynes and ditches draining the levels around Street create ideal conditions for rats. The fields to the north and west of town are wet grassland for much of the year and rats move along the drainage channels between farmland and the residential edges of Street. The area around the River Brue, which passes to the north of the town towards Glastonbury, is particularly active. Properties on the northern side of Street near Leigh Road and those backing onto the open ground towards Pomparles Bridge tend to see more rat activity than the higher ground to the south around Walton.

Clarks Village and the food outlets in the town centre bring commercial pest control needs, with the volume of visitors and food waste requiring regular monitoring during busier periods. Wasp removal is a steady part of summer work in Street, with nests found in the roof spaces of older houses, in garden sheds and in the boundary walls between properties. The flat, open character of the landscape around Street means there are fewer tree-related pest issues like squirrels than in hillier parts of Somerset, but the dampness and the proximity of the levels keeps rodent pressure constant throughout the year.
