Henfield is a large village in the low-lying country between the South Downs and the coast in West Sussex, surrounded by flat farmland and the water meadows of the River Adur. The village has a proper High Street with shops, pubs and a church and the housing ranges from old timber-framed cottages in the centre to newer developments on the edges. The BN5 postcode covers the village and the surrounding countryside and the flat, damp landscape creates ideal conditions for rats. The Adur and its tributaries wind through the fields nearby and the ditches and drainage channels that criss-cross the farmland give brown rats a network of routes to travel along out of sight.

The water meadows flood regularly in winter and when they do the rats move to higher ground, which often means into village gardens and buildings. Older properties in the centre of Henfield are most affected because they tend to have more gaps and entry points than newer builds. Mice are equally busy here, moving between the fields and houses as the seasons change. The barns, stables and farm outbuildings dotted around the edges of the village are always worth checking too, as they provide shelter and food sources that keep rodent numbers high in the area.

In summer, the warm sheltered gardens in Henfield see plenty of wasp activity. Nests appear in roof spaces, wall cavities and garden sheds and the fruit trees and hedgerows that are common in village gardens provide a food source that draws them in. The nature reserve at Woods Mill on the edge of the village is a wonderful spot for wildlife, but the woodland and wetland habitats there also support a healthy population of grey squirrels that occasionally find their way into nearby houses. Henfield has all the appeal of a traditional Sussex village, but its position in this low-lying river landscape means it will always have more than its share of pest pressure from the surrounding countryside.
