Steyning is a handsome small town at the foot of the South Downs in West Sussex, sitting in the Adur Valley where the river cuts through the chalk hills. The town has a lovely collection of older buildings along the High Street and Church Street, with a mix of timber-framed, flint and brick properties dating back centuries in some cases. These period buildings give Steyning its character but they also provide the gaps and openings that mice need. Worn flint pointing, spaces around original window frames and gaps under doors that have dropped over the years are the most common entry points. We deal with mice in the older parts of Steyning regularly and the connected nature of some of the buildings along the High Street means a problem in one property can spread to the next.

The River Adur and its flood plain sit just to the east of the town and this wet environment supports a healthy rat population. Rats use the riverbanks, drainage ditches and the damp ground along the valley floor as their base and they move towards the town when food sources draw them in. Properties on the eastern side of Steyning and those backing onto the water meadows see the most activity. The surrounding downland and farmland also play a role, with rats and mice moving between the fields and the edges of the built-up area as the seasons change. Wasp nests are a summer regular, appearing in the flint walls, under tile roofs and in the garden sheds and outbuildings across the town. The warm, south-facing slopes of the Downs and the sheltered position of the valley seem to suit wasp colonies and nests can grow quickly during a warm summer.
