Littlehampton is a coastal town at the mouth of the River Arun in West Sussex, with a harbour, a long stretch of seafront and a town centre that has seen a good deal of regeneration. The older part of the town around River Road and the harbour area has a dense mix of Victorian and Edwardian terraces, while the residential areas spreading inland towards Wick and Rustington are more typical suburban housing from the twentieth century. The river and harbour create prime rat territory. Water, food waste from the fishing boats and restaurants along the quay and plenty of hiding spots in the old harbour walls all combine to keep rat numbers up. The Victorian terraces closer to the seafront have shared walls, cellars and old drainage and mice move through these properties along pipe runs and through gaps in the brickwork. Mouse problems in these older houses often need a careful approach because the mice can be using routes inside the walls that are hard to spot from the living spaces. The commercial areas around the High Street and the food outlets near the seafront also attract rodents and businesses here need to stay on top of pest management.

The coast brings its own pest challenges. Seagulls nest on flat roofs and chimney stacks across the town centre and seafront, becoming noisy and aggressive during the breeding season. They are protected during nesting, so prevention work needs to happen before they settle in. Wasp nests are common in the older houses and sheds across Littlehampton during summer and bed bug calls have increased in recent years in the guesthouses and rental properties near the coast.
