Lewes is the county town of East Sussex, a place with real character that climbs up the steep sides of the Ouse valley. The town centre is packed with medieval, Tudor and Georgian buildings lining the narrow streets around the High Street, School Hill and Cliffe. These older buildings are full of the kind of gaps, cellars and uneven walls that pests find irresistible. Rats use the town's aging drainage network to move beneath the commercial centre and we deal with rat problems in the Cliffe area and along the streets near the river on a regular basis. The River Ouse itself runs right through the middle of Lewes and properties along the riverbank at Cliffe Bridge and towards the railway station sit in prime rat territory. Flooding has been an issue here over the years and when water levels rise it pushes rats out of their burrows and into nearby buildings.

The hillside setting means that many houses in Lewes are built into slopes, with retaining walls and split levels that create voids underneath. Mice and rats both take advantage of these spaces and the steep gardens on the western side of town towards the castle provide cover for rodents moving between properties. Mouse control is a steady part of our work here, especially in the older houses where pipework and cabling pass through walls with gaps that have widened over the centuries.

Grey squirrels are common in the leafier parts of Lewes, particularly around Southover and along the Pells, where mature trees give them easy access to rooftops. Wasp nests show up every summer in the tile-hung and weatherboarded buildings that give Lewes its distinctive look and the warm south-facing walls along the High Street seem to attract nesting queens year after year.
