Hove runs seamlessly into Brighton along the Sussex coast, with a distinct identity built around its wide avenues, Regency squares and a seafront of grand terraces facing the English Channel. The western end towards Portslade has a more residential, less touristy feel, while the central parts around Brunswick and Palmeira Square are classic Regency with large houses divided into flats. The density of older buildings in Hove brings a range of pest challenges. Mice are extremely common in the converted flats and maisonettes along the seafront and the streets behind. Rats are an ongoing concern across Hove, driven by the Victorian sewer system that runs beneath the streets and by the food waste from the busy restaurant and cafe scene along Church Road and Western Road. The drainage in the older parts of Hove is over a hundred years old in many places and cracked or collapsed sections give rats direct access to the buildings above. The Hove Park area and the gardens behind the larger properties on The Drive and Wilbury Road also see rat activity, with the open green space providing a route between the surrounding streets. Portslade and the commercial area around the Basin Road North industrial estate bring a different kind of pest pressure, with warehouses, food processing units and scrap yards all requiring regular monitoring.

Seagulls are a major issue along the Hove seafront and through the town centre. Herring gulls nest on the flat roofs of converted houses and commercial buildings and the noise, mess and aggressive behaviour during breeding season generates a high volume of complaints every year. Wasp removal adds to the summer workload, with nests commonly found behind fascia boards, in the eaves of the tall Regency terraces and in the garden walls of properties across the central and western parts of town. Flea treatments are another regular call-out in Hove, often linked to the high density of rental properties and the turnover between tenants.
