Lancing is a coastal village in West Sussex, sitting on the flat ground between the South Downs and the sea with the River Adur running along its western edge. Lancing College chapel on the downs above is the most recognisable landmark, but the village itself is mostly residential, with housing stretching along the coast road from Shoreham towards Worthing. The properties are a mix of inter-war bungalows, 1930s semis and post-war houses with some newer development on infill sites. Mice are a common problem in Lancing, with the proximity of the downs and the open farmland to the north providing a constant source of field mice that move into houses from autumn onwards. The bungalows along the north side of the village, closer to the fields and the downland scarp, tend to see mouse activity first each year.

The River Adur and the water meadows along its banks bring rat activity into the western side of Lancing. The riverbanks between the Old Toll Bridge and the footbridge at Shoreham Airport are overgrown in places and provide cover for rats to move between the water and the nearby residential streets. Properties along the Lancing Manor end of the village and those near the recreation ground backing onto the river report rat sightings on a regular basis. The drainage ditches that run beneath the flat coastal ground also play a part, carrying water from the downs to the sea and giving rats routes through the built-up area.

Wasp removal is a steady summer job in Lancing, with nests turning up in the roof spaces of bungalows, in garden sheds and in the cavity walls of the older houses along the coast road. The warm south-facing aspect of the village and the sheltered gardens behind the houses create good wasp territory. The beach huts and the commercial properties along the seafront also generate occasional pest calls, with rats and gulls both attracted to the food waste that accumulates during the summer visitor season.
