Pevensey is a small village in East Sussex with a history stretching back to Roman times, centred on the ruins of Pevensey Castle and the cluster of old houses around the High Street. Pevensey Bay, the coastal strip to the south, is a more modern and spread-out area of bungalows and holiday homes facing the sea. Between the two lies flat, low-lying ground that was once marshland and is still crossed by drainage ditches and streams feeding towards the coast. This damp landscape has a direct effect on pest problems. Rats thrive in the network of ditches and overgrown banks around the village and the Pevensey Levels to the north provide a huge expanse of wet grassland where rat numbers are naturally high. Wasp removal is a summer feature in both parts of Pevensey, with nests found in garden sheds, roof spaces and the old walls around the castle area. The coastal position at Pevensey Bay also brings gull problems during the breeding season, with herring gulls nesting on bungalow roofs and the flat-roofed commercial buildings near the beach. The combination of rural, coastal and historical settings in this small area makes Pevensey a varied and interesting place for pest control work.
